Famous poet, lyricist, and filmmaker Said Gareth He passed away in Los Angeles on November 4, 2023. The son of acclaimed novelist Adil Rashid, Saeed Gareth is a multifaceted writer whose work has left an indelible mark on the worlds of music and film.
Said Gareth’s illustrious career was a testament to his extraordinary talent. He has worked with iconic composers such as Viju Shah, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Naushad Ali, Anu Malik, Bapa Lahiri, Abhishek Ray, Bapi Lahiri, Gaurav Dasgupta and various Collaborated with an international record label. His creative journey also intersected with some of the biggest names in the film world. Jagmohan Mandla, Anand Mahendru, Yash Chopra, Sorila Parida, Joy Augustine, Kabir Bedi, Akbar Khan, just to name a few.
Saeed Gareth’s talent extended to film writing as well, leaving his mark on projects such as ‘Zara Si Boule – Little Mistakes’, ‘The Apartment’ and ‘Miami, New York’. However, it was his work as a lyricist that marks the origin of his film career, which began with Jagmohan Mandla’s ‘Kamla’. The film’s music was composed by the legendary Bappi Lahiri and soulful performances were provided by Salma Agha and Pankaj Udas.

His lyrical genius continued to shine through in subsequent films like ‘Vishkanya’, ‘Janam Kundli’, ‘Aa Dekhen Zara’, ‘Aloo Chaat’ and ‘Victory’. Saeed Gules’ poetic expressions and melodic storytelling graced the gem soundtracks of these films.
As a testament to his poetic talent, his collection of shayari has been compiled into a book titled ‘Kuchh Dil Se’. This anthology encapsulates the essence of his artistic soul and serves as a tribute to his lyrical eloquence.

Rajesh Rati, who started his career as Jagmohan Mundra’s assistant along with Syed Gures during the making of ‘Kamla’, fondly remembers his genius at work. “He was a spontaneous lyricist,” Rati says. During a music session with the iconic Bappi Lahiri, Syed Gareth took a break and went outside for a cigarette, and by the time the smoke cleared, he had finished the lyrics. Rati recalls. “He always used me as a sounding board. His lyrics were consistently catchy and meaningful, and his sense of humor was unbeatable.”
Said Grires’ death is a great loss to the world of arts and entertainment. Filmmaker Rajesh Rati laments that he was a uniquely talented writer whose potential was never realized. His legacy will forever resonate through the songs and stories he created, etching his name in the history of Indian music and cinema.
