Monday
american buffalo 8pm on PBS (check local programming). Ken Burns is back with another documentary. This is his two-part series on water buffalo and their evolution, going back to the early 1800s. Although it’s not entirely clear how someone wins a prize on this show (which is the eternal question: is it better to be the nice guy or the wilder type? ?) A car accident that you can’t take your eyes off.
Navajo Police: Class 57 Starting at 9pm on HBO. Poltergeist (1982) 10pm on AMC. It’s all fun and games as a ghost interacts with a Southern California family through the television, until the ghost turns into a threat. The story follows Steve (Craig T. Nelson) and Diane (JoBeth Williams) after their daughter Carol Ann (Heather O’Rourke) goes missing amid creepy and spooky happenings around their home. , which depicts consulting a parapsychologist and an exorcist.
Friday
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016) 9:45pm on Syfy. In my head, Mr. Darcy has always been tall, dark, and handsome (look at him played by Colin Firth or Matthew Macfadyen), quietly lost in thought in various corners. There should be, but if you like supernatural things, you’ll probably like Mr. Darcy better. As well as his other attributes, he is a highly skilled zombie slayer. The title of this movie says it all. The unmarried Bennett sisters seek out worthy bachelorettes while staying safe amidst a growing zombie population. In Jane Austen’s book, Elizabeth Bennet is attracted to Mr. Darcy because of her love for him, but in this movie, she is attracted to his zombie-killing skills.
The Uninvited (1944) Chinese Medicine at 11:45 p.m. Starring Ray Milland (Rick) and Ruth Hussey (Pamela), this movie is a classic ghost story. Rick and his sister Pamela decide to buy an abandoned 18th century house. The owner linked the house to his daughter’s death and sold it over the objections of her granddaughter. When Rick and Pamela move in, they have to contend with some not-so-happy ghosts. The film is “as solemn in its intention to raise goose meat as the strange ghost stories told to shivering young men around a campfire on a dark, windy night,” Bosley Crowther wrote in New York. I wrote this in a book review for the Times. “All the old standbys are there: the flickering of candles, the slowly opening doors, the supernatural excitement, the occasional scent of mimosa.”
Saturday
Hotel Transylvania (2012) 7:15pm on Freeform. If you’ve watched a scary movie two nights in a row and your fight-or-flight response is working overtime, this cutely animated take on a spooky movie might give your nervous system a break . Count Dracula (Adam Sandler) owns a hotel that the monsters visit when they want to relax. This weekend, Dracula is planning a party to celebrate his daughter Mavis’ (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday. Things go awry when a human (Andy Samberg) accidentally slips into the party and she subsequently falls in love with Mavis, a vampire.
Sunday
Commonly known as Mr.Butterfly Starting at 9pm on HBO. There’s no denying that Michael Chow has led an interesting life. Born in Shanghai, Chou moved to London, where he opened a Chinese restaurant catering to British customers with Italian waiters. His restaurant, Mr. Chow, currently has locations in New York, Miami, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles. This documentary film focuses on his life and his recently revealed alternate identity as an artist working under the name “M”.
