GHOSTLY GOINGS-ON

In the mood for a ghost story? The Tennessee State Museum in Nashville will tell the tale of the Bell Witch, one of the most famous folklore stories of the American South, in a Lunch & Learn program at noon CDT Oct. 19. Participants may attend in person or virtually via a livestream at TNMuseum.org/videos. RSVPs are not required. From 1817 to 1821, the Bell family of Robertson County, Tennessee, was said to have been haunted by a supernatural force that had the ability to speak, affect the physical environment and shape-shift. An 1894 book by newspaper editor Martin Van Buren Ingram spread the legend. “Unraveling the Mysteries of the Bell Witch” will discuss how people attempted to explain the unexplainable and show how the legend is rooted in real events that profoundly shaped the American South for years to come. The presenter is David Britton, public historian and park manager for Port Royal State Historic Park in Adams, Tennessee, and Dunbar Cave State Park in Clarksville, Tennessee.
