Mahadev gambling app scandal: Huma Qureshi and Kapil Sharma seek more time until ED: Bollywood News
Bollywood actors Huma Qureshi and Kapil Sharma have sought more time to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning in the Mahadev gambling app case. The ED had on Thursday summoned Kapil and Huma in connection with the money laundering probe in connection with the betting app case.
Investigators say Huma Qureshi promoted the app and Kapil Sharma is suspected of hosting guests at the app’s promoter’s wedding abroad. The investigating authorities have also issued summons to actors Ranbir Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Hina Khan. It is unclear whether these actors will be charged in this incident. Ranbir Kapoor had also sought two weeks’ adjournment to appear in court for questioning.
According to the ED, a large-scale hawala operation was carried out to siphon gambling proceeds into offshore accounts. The agency alleges Ranbir Kapoor promoted the app through social media ads and accepted cash payments, which are treated as proceeds of crime. The ED summoned him to its Raipur office on October 6. He requested two weeks’ time for him to appear before the central agency. It is unclear whether the ED will grant his request.
Several other celebrities have also come under the ED scanner. They were reportedly hired to perform at app promoter Sourav Chandrakar’s lavish UAE wedding. Mr. Chandrakar is accused of spending Rs 200 million on his wedding in February 2023. This included payments to celebrities who appeared at the wedding, five-star accommodation for guests, and a private jet to transport relatives from India to the UAE. All payments were made in cash.
