Texas has been ranked the second most popular state for filming horror movies in the United States, according to a new study from InsureMyTrip.
There are approximately 1,089 horror films set in the state.
Missouri City, Texas was the third most popular city for filming horror movies, with approximately 92 horror movies filmed there. Films made in Missouri City include “They Wait in the Dark” (2022) and “The Cursed Grave” (2009).
One of the most famous and well-known horror films set in this state is the 1974 classic “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Filmed in Austin, specifically around Leander, Kingsland, and Bastrop.
“Visiting the filming locations of your favorite horror movies is always a fun getaway before or after Halloween,” said Sarah Weber, marketing director at InsureMyTrip. “This research will help scary movie lovers secure their travel plans early and narrow down potential money-savers.”

California was the top state with more than 2,400 horror movies, including classics like “Halloween,” “The Shining” and “Psycho.” Florida came in third with 749 horror movies.
