Angelina Jolie’s ‘Maria’ and Elton John’s documentary
The 2024 New York Film Festival has announced its Spotlight section lineup, including Pablo Larraín’s film Maria Starring Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas in her final days, plus the U.S. premiere of the documentary directed by RJ Cutler and David Furnish Elton John: It’s never too late.
The section will also feature the North American premiere of Alex Ross Perry’s anti-biological documentary about the rock band Pavement, titled Sidewalks; TWST/Things We Said TodayAndrei Ojika’s archival film of the Beatles’ 1965 Shea Stadium concert; and Jacques Audiard’s Cannes-winning film Emilia Perez.
Additional films on the Spotlight list include the Jesse Eisenberg-directed film Real painStarring Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin as cousins trying to reconnect on a pilgrimage to their Holocaust-surviving grandmother’s birthplace in Poland, Brett Storey and Stephen Mainig’s immersive documentary Union On the daily struggles of the Amazon workers union and the events that led to its historic vote in 2022; Petra Costa End of the world in the tropicson the rise of the far right in Brazil; Walter Salles’ book I’m still hereA political drama that explores the true story of a woman’s search for information about her husband’s kidnapping by the Brazilian government; a sci-fi satire by Jay Madden and Evan and Galen Johnson of world leaders at the G7 summit, Rumors; Scott McGee and David Siegel’s adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s novel Friend.
The section will also include the U.S. premiere of another “Last Film” by the late director Jean-Luc Godard, Scenarioswhich will be displayed with Screening of the trailer for the movie “Scenario” A documentary film designed by Godard and shot in 2021 by long-time collaborator Fabrice Aragno.
Leos Carax also honors Godard in his selection for Spotlight, It’s not mewhich will have its North American premiere in New York.
The Lincoln Center Film Festival, which presents the New York Film Festival, announced earlier that Luca Guadagnino’s film gay The film will have its US premiere at Spotlight.
The 62nd New York Film Festival is scheduled to take place from September 27 to October 14.
