Ajay Devgn and Tigmanshu Dhulia to collaborate in film on the life of India’s first Dalit cricketer Palwankar Baru | Hindi Film News
Actor Ajay Devgn, who was recently seen in the sports drama film ‘Maidaan’, might soon embark on another sports-based project. Reports suggest that the ‘Singam’ actor is working on a film based on the life of India’s first Dalit cricketer Palwankar Balloo. Film producer Preeti Sinha revealed this information on X.
Preity shared a tweet saying, “We, @ajaydevgn, @dirtigmanshu & @pritisinha333 are producing the story of Balu Palwankar based on @Ram_Guha’s book ‘A Corner Of A Foreign Field’. The story of this great cricketer will be adapted into a film very soon.” However, official confirmation on this is awaited from both Ajay Devgn and Tigmanshu Dhulia.
The book on which the film is based narrates the history of cricket in the Indian subcontinent and goes beyond simply chronicling the game to also feature cricketing legends such as CK Nayudu and Sachin Tendulkar and, most notably, the incredible importance that historical figures such as Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Mahatma Gandhi have played in the story of cricket.
In this book, Guha explores the careers of British cricketers like Lord Harris and Dr Jardine, shedding light on the workings of the British Empire, and also introduces readers to India’s first great slow bowler, Palwankar Baloo, whose life reflects the constant struggle against caste discrimination.
For those who don’t know about Palwankar Balloo, he was a legendary sportsman belonging to the Dalit community who started his career as a groundskeeper for the Pune cricket team. It wasn’t until he was selected to compete in the Hindu Gymkhana in 1896 that his life began to inspire people all over the world.
On the work front, Ajay Devgn’s last film, Maidaan, was also a biopic based on the life of footballer Syed Abdul Rahim. He will also star in Vikas Bahl’s horror-thriller Shaitaan opposite Jyothika, R Madhavan and Janki Bodhiwala. He will next be seen in Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again, which is scheduled to release on August 15, 2024.
