Hollywood is considering dealing with artificial intelligence companies
Hollywood is always trying to find ways to produce movies and TV shows for less money, and AI was very exciting for them because they thought they finally had a way to produce things for less money. But they were never sure where “less money” would come into play, as AI immediately showed that it wasn’t going to replace anyone any time soon.
So Hollywood has two options here: They can carry on as usual and monitor the technology. Or they can work with these companies and help improve their technology while potentially putting themselves out of business or in a difficult situation where their own ideas are stolen.
This is the decision they are now considering.
Bloomberg reports that all the major studios are deciding what works for them.
There is money to be made here. These AI companies will pay to license things, but imagine seeing the things they make have a tinge of whatever you feed them to make a few bucks. And imagine the lawsuits if characters, voices, stories, or dialogue were pulled from these movies and TV shows and appeared in something else.
See how Scarlett Johansson is now suing OpenAI for imitating her voice.
Now, I guess this makes sense, but maybe we should say it out loud: Hollywood needs to get its act together to draft some regulations before it starts selling its products openly. We’ve just received a double whammy about how humans use AI in industry. It doesn’t make sense to give information to AI companies after all.
Studios want to find a way to work with AI companies because there’s a lot of money at stake, but it seems pointless to do that before they actually decide how and why these things should be used. Especially in conversation with filmmakers, who express the need to eventually make films and TV shows.
And if you’re just looking to get money and license your material, which famous filmmakers would want to work with you?
