In an interview with Bustle, Newton revealed that Colin and Penelope have been dating since the last two seasons. And now finally, in the third season, it’s their turn. So their romance reminded her of her favorite sitcom, FRIENDS. He said: “We always say what Colin and Penny are like Ross and Rachel [from Friends], because it never comes in handy at the right time. They still miss each other. It’s a lot of fun playing different versions when someone is willing to commit and the other is not.”
The actor also added that their characters’ beautiful love story has evolved over the past four years since the show debuted Netflix in 2020. She said the time allowed her and Coughlan to prepare and come out for their romance in season three.

The eight-episode series is split into two parts, with Part 1 premiering on May 16 and Part 2 on June 13. In the third season, Penelope decides to move on from her relationship with Colin. In order to gain independence from her mothers and sisters, she intends to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown and decides to get married. Colin returns from his trip to London and tries to hook Penelope up, helping her find a husband, and in return her friend falls in love with her.
The rest of the Bridgerton ensemble cast includes Claudia Jessie, Luke Thompson, Golda Rochevel, Ajoa Ando, Ruth Gemmell, Hannah Dodd, Simon Ashley, Jonathan Bailey and Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown. Jess Brownell takes over as showrunner from Chris Van Dusen this season.
