Actor Shekhar Suman, who has appeared in numerous films and TV shows and is recognized for his versatile acting skills, will be collaborating with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali in his upcoming OTT project ‘Heeramandi’. In an exclusive chat with ETimes, the actor talks about ‘Heera Mandi’, his son Adhyayan Suman’s career and more. Excerpt from the chat:

Adhyayan has had a tough journey and now he will be seen in Heera Mandi, which came as a surprise to many.
Please tell us more about his character…
Adhyayan plays the lead character in the show. Interestingly, there was a time when they needed someone who could play a younger version of me. Bhansali encouraged Adhyayan to play a younger version of me. So he plays two roles in the movie. ”I said to Adhyayan, “Working with Bhansali is like winning an award, so he should wear it with pride like a medal.”

But Shekhar, were you worried about Adhyayan and his career?
There is a ray of hope, ups and downs, happiness and sadness are part of life. I’m glad he was held high above the water during those dark times. He continues to fight and succeeds, leaving Bhansali to deliver the final verdict. There’s no greater accolade when one of the greatest filmmakers casts you and you’re happy with it.

Do you regret not working with Bhansali in the early days of ‘Devdas’? I ended up playing the role of Chunni Babu…Earlier, I couldn’t play the role of Chuni Babu in ‘Devdas’ as I was busy for 30 days in a month due to the show. If you are working with Bhansali, you have to dedicate 50-60 days to him. So I didn’t do that role because I didn’t want to do anything unfair to him. I always have that regret, but God gave me something else to be happy about.

Please tell us more about ‘Heera Mandi’ and your role!
Heera Mandi is a thriller. It is a story about the relationship between a Nawab and his courtesans and the intrigues that once took place. I play a Nawab opposite Manisha Koirala. Making one ‘Utsav’ or one of his Bhansali films is equivalent to making 100 ordinary films.
