family star movie review

‘Family Star’ stars Vijay Devarakonda as a young man from a middle-class background and focuses on his journey to take on family responsibilities in a time of turmoil.

Story:

Govardhan (Vijay Devarakonda) is a dedicated young man who goes to great lengths to support his middle-class family. He takes care of his grandmother, two brothers, his sister-in-law, and their children, shouldering this responsibility without thinking of marriage. His perspective on modern girls, or “genex girls,” keeps him away from romantic entanglements. But everything changes when he meets a beautiful girl Indu (Mrunal Thakur). Her entry into life brings a series of unexpected twists and turns leading to a transformative journey for Govardhan.

analysis:

Vijay Devarakonda gives a performance that explores naturalism and realism in ‘Family Star’. While he effectively embodies his role, there is a sense of being typecast into similar roles, and at times he leans toward exaggerated expressions that may disappoint some fans. It may also change. Nevertheless, he manages to convincingly depict the frustration, love, and anger of middle-class youth.

Mrunal Thakur is known for his mesmerizing performances in films like ‘Sitaram’ and ‘Hi Nanna’, but unfortunately his role in ‘Family Star’ is limited as it is a routine one. Her character lacks depth and she is unable to recreate the magic that she is known for, which dampens the intensity of her performance.

The supporting cast, including Jagapathi Babu, Venera Kishore, Rohini Hattangadi, Victoria Grace, Marissa Rose Gordon, Divyansha Kaushik, and Ajay Ghosh, do well in their respective roles. There isn’t much room for the characters themselves to shine.

Director Parashuram’s story feels like a blend of earlier successful films like ‘Megastar Chiranjeevi’s Gang Leader’ and ‘Varun Tej’s Tori Prema’, with a predictable and somewhat formulaic story. It reaches its climax. The film has some mundane and cringe-worthy scenes and relies heavily on the presence of Vijay Devarakonda and Mrunal Thakur to carry it through.

Scenes depicting middle-class families are exaggerated and lack emotional depth. Interval twists are predictable and the first half is below average. The second half fails to improve on this, testing the audience’s patience with unrealistic and artificial sequences that leave them perplexed. The dialogue is banal and repetitive, and the film ends in a predictable manner.

Gopi Sundar’s music is not memorable except for a few songs. His career scores are below average and lack impact. While KU Mohanan’s cinematography is satisfactory, Marthand K. Venkatesh’s editing could have been more tightly edited to eliminate many obstacles in the film. However, the production value is decent.

verdict:

‘Family Star’ falls short of expectations and lacks the charm and magic of Parashuram’s earlier success ‘Geetha Govindam’. Despite attempts to recreate some of that magic, especially in certain scenes, the film comes across as artificial and unconvincing. Even the performances of Vijay Devarakonda and Mrunal Thakur could not save the family star and it ultimately sank as a disappointing endeavor.
