Freaky Friday 2 is officially out with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis
Disney is gearing up to get its horror on again.
The studio has hired Nisha Ganatra, who recently directed episodes of the Hulu miniseries Welcome to Chippendalesto direct a sequel to the 2003 family comedy Freaky Fridaygiving momentum to the long-promised project and putting it on track for summer filming in Los Angeles.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the original film, are in negotiations to reprise their roles as a mother and daughter who find themselves swapping bodies and lives.
Curtis and Lohan have talked about their hopes for a sequel for several years now, but talks have only begun in earnest in recent weeks. On Friday, Curtis posted a photo of herself with Lohan on Instagram.
Andrew Gunn, who produced the 2003 film, is producing in collaboration with former Disney executive Kristen Burr. Annemarie Sanderlin will executive produce. It’s unclear whether the feature will be released theatrically or debut on Disney+. The project contains an early draft by Elise Hollander.
Disney has created a cottage industry using… Freaky Friday, which includes several films as well as Broadway productions. The film is based on the 1972 children’s book by Mary Rogers and the 1976 original, starring Barbara Harris as the mother and Jodie Foster as the daughter. Each installment attempted to bring the basic concept of living life in someone else’s place to modern teen settings. Lohan is no longer a teenager, and the new screenplay, written by Jordan Weiss, will reportedly bring a multi-generational approach to the story.
Curtis is, on some levels, hotter than ever professionally, as he took home an Oscar for last year’s film Everything everywhere at once And the last Halloween Triple reboot.
Lohan is in the midst of a comeback, having starred in two popular Netflix romantic comedies, including this year’s one. Irish Desire.
Ganatra is known for bringing a light touch to her serial works that span episodes of television series And like that to Brooklyn nine nine. Her distinguished works include: late time at nightthe Mindy Kaling-Emma Thompson comedy set in the world of late-night talk shows, and High notea romantic drama set in the music scene starring Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross.
