Prime Video has developed a new movie titled ‘Ae Wasan Mere Watan’. The film stars Sara Ali Khan in the lead role. Let’s see how it goes.

Story:

‘E Watan Mere Watan’ is based on the life of Usha Mehta (played by Sara Ali Khan), an unsung hero who fought against the British army to achieve India’s independence. She was a Gandhian and started an underground radio station, Congress Radio. The film focuses on how Usha Mehta contributed to the Quit India movement.

Plus points:

We all know about the ‘Quit India Movement’ started by Mahatma Gandhi during World War II, but what about ‘Congress Radio’ which played a crucial role in spreading Gandhi’s message to the nation? I know very little. Gandhi and all other important Congress leaders were arrested immediately after the movement was announced. Although newspapers suppressed Gandhi’s message from reaching the people, it was Usha Mehta who reignited the Quit India movement through Congress Radio. She played recorded messages of prominent leaders on radio stations. ‘E Watan Mere Watan’ shines a spotlight on this little-known chapter of the freedom struggle and pays homage to the unsung heroes.

The movie gains momentum with a radio station setting. How Usha Mehta and his friends set up their radio station and the struggle they went through to stay off the British radar is well portrayed. The Brits’ efforts to bring down radio stations will keep us glued to our screens.

Sara Ali Khan is very good and she is leading the charge in this patriotic film. She brilliantly displayed the courage required for the role of Usha Mehta. Emraan Hashmi’s role was advertised as a cameo, but it was an important role, and the script and acting were excellent. He brings Sara Ali Khan to the center stage and supports her well. Suparsh Shrivastab, Alex Onell and Sachin Khedkhar are good in their acting.

Minus points:

The middle part is attractive, but the first and last parts have weak designs. The story unfolds at a slow pace in the first moments. The film begins with the British asking the Indians to vacate a building where they suspect a radio station may be hidden. After that, we get some boring flashbacks, but the movie only becomes interesting once the radio station is established.

The love track is poorly handled and not very convincing. This aspect was supposed to give the film emotional depth, but it didn’t. The love track thus acts as a weak link to the main plot, weakening the overall impact. After a while, this movie becomes very predictable.

The final half-hour scenes are lackluster and poorly directed. The necessary tension at the end is not built well, and the producers are unable to devise an impactful finale. A patriotic film like this needs a strong ending, and E Watan Mere Watan falls short in this regard.

Technical aspects:

The production design by Amrita Mahal Nakai and Sabrina Singh was excellent and captured the pre-independence era beautifully. The costumes are well designed. The background score and songs are decent. Amalendu Chaudhary has captured the visuals well through his lens. The production value is good, but the editing still leaves a lot of room for improvement.

Director Kannan Iyer’s direction is superb. This movie is good in parts but doesn’t provide a great experience by the end. There are some heartbreaking sequences, but still, the writing team could have done a better job.

verdict:

Overall, ‘E Watan Mere Watan’ sheds light on a little-known chapter in India’s freedom struggle. Sara Ali Khan played Usha Mehta on screen and the actress did a convincing job. She was graciously supported by Emraan Hashmi. The middle section is attractive, but the beginning and end are not effectively expressed. The film loses momentum in its crucial final moments and the love trajectory is poorly written. If you’re interested in learning about historical events, Ae Watan Mere Wasan is a solid watch.
