Watch the trailer for Harold and the Purple Crayon starring Zachary Levi

Zachary Levi brings the beloved children’s book character to life in the trailer for an animated/live-action hybrid. Harold and the Purple Pen.

Carlos Saldanha’s adaptation of Crockett Johnson’s classic novel features a new version of Harold, now an adult. In the trailer, Harold (Levy) accidentally causes chaos when he finds himself stepping off the page and into the human world. With his ability to create anything with a purple crayon, Harold opens up a world of possibilities, from creating terrifying flying spiders to producing an airplane in flight.

Fortunately, Harold isn’t navigating real life alone, as he gets help from his new friends, Moose (Lil Rel Howery) and Mel (Benjamin Bottany). Harold also gets guidance from a mysterious character named Gary (Jemaine Clement).

“Do you know what brought you to life?” Gary asks Harold. “This is what your crayon is made of. The most mysterious, powerful, extraordinary things on earth: pure imagination.

Harold tries to adapt to the human world despite his magical abilities, as he gets a job in a department store. But things quickly go awry when he accidentally turns a children’s helicopter into a real one. “What were you thinking?” asks his co-worker, played by Zooey Deschanel.

The film’s official synopsis reads: “Harold can make anything come to life just by drawing it. As he grows up and retreats from the pages of a book into the physical world, Harold finds that he has a lot to learn about real life — and that his trusty purple crayon might make funnier shrieks than He thought it was possible.When the power of limitless imagination falls into the wrong hands, it will take all the ingenuity of Harold and his friends to save the real world and his own.

Harold and the Purple Pen It hits theaters on August 2.
