BBC Studios buys Surviving Summer, a newsreader produced in Australia
BBC Studios Productions Australia has acquired Werner Film Productions based in Melbourne, Australia, the production company behind drama series such as News readerwhich is broadcast on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, ABC, BBC and Netflix Summer survival.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but it is the latest acquisition of a production company by BBC Studios. “The deal represents a significant investment by BBC Studios Productions Australia in the local production industry and provides Werner Film Productions with the support of one of the world’s largest global distributors as it continues to grow its production of drama series for Australian and global audiences.” Companies said.
Werner Film Productions will continue to be led by company director Joanna Werner and managing director Stuart Menzies and will operate alongside BBC Studios’ local production arm as an independent brand, with both companies producing their own projects. “This model replicates the way BBC Studios works with many other production companies and independent companies invested in the UK and globally, supporting some of the world’s leading creative companies and talent,” the UK public broadcaster’s commercial arm said.
Werner Film is currently in production for the third season News readerwritten by Michael Lucas and starring Anna Torv (Mind hunter(Wissam Reed)Prime Suspect 1973) as colleagues in an Australian television newsroom in the 1980s. She is the channel’s star news anchor, while he is an ambitious young TV reporter.
