Mubarak Murder Movie Review: A self-aware satire that almost delivers on the promise of a criminal organization | Bollywood

“Mubarak Murders” movie review: By the end of the movie, the temptation to compare it to “White Lotus” or the “Knives Out” series has disappeared. Because at its core, the Mubarak murders are not just a story of rich thugs socializing at a colonial country club. This is a self-aware piece of satire that ultimately works. Mubarak Murder Movie Review: Vijay Varma and Sara Ali Khan headline this crime syndicate

The beginning of The Mubarak Murders feels a little far-fetched, with a roll call of characters from high society being introduced by nicknames that are supposed to be shorthand for their descriptions, but throughout the whole thing, a child is I’m looking for a cat named Prince Harry. Karisma Kapoor, in her recent film Karma Calling, plays a film star who oozes stardom, a bit closer to her contemporary Raveena Tandon. Asim Gulati and Suhail Nayyar worked together last year in another project ‘Zee Karda’ which was set in a similar social class. There are also unique actors like Brijendra Kala, Tisca Chopra, Deven Bhojani, and the reigning king of them all, the hilarious and talkative Pankaj Tripathi. I’m sure you’ve seen this movie before.

Then the shenanigans begin. Vijay Varma’s character breaks the fourth wall and mimics Tripathi’s love for verbal gestures. It’s as if to say, “I know what you see, but that’s not what it is.” Director Homi Adajania is toying with the ‘Rashomon’ effect with his unique off-field style. The entertaining script features a blood-splattered charismatic whispering in Pankaj’s ear, “Yeh pata lagane ki hai tankwa sarkar aapko deti hai (government will pay to find the murderer)” It traverses between realities, such as the film’s dry and funny murder scenes. ). ”

This is Charisma’s return to the screen and she looks drop dead gorgeous. But one of the strengths of Murder Mubarak, which some might attribute especially to her OTTness, is that it never gives any particular character any seriousness. Karisma is tired of playing B-movie actors with dark pasts, and Sanjay Kapoor plays the desperate Raja, who plays with the specter of patriarchal pride at every turn.

Of course, Murder Mubarak is about murder, and even if you don’t have the correct theorem, you can still enjoy it even if you solve the mystery correctly over the course of the movie. Whodunnits are a very perfunctory genre, as revelations follow one another, necessitating the final stages of the business to be complicated. Homi and his screenwriters Suprotim Sengupta and Ghazal Dhaliwal portray them brightly in the film.

My only complaint about the writing is that sometimes clever attempts at subtlety, such as Vijay’s mother’s endless rants about communism and class commentary, end up hitting obvious points. . I think this satirical portrayal of the shallow and materialistic Delhi elite is mainly for comic relief, but thankfully Tisca has heightened the farcical tone to her work. There is.

verdict

At one point in the film, the talkative Pankaj Tripathi agrees with Vijay’s blunt suggestion that detective work and love are sides of the same coin. That’s where this story resolves itself. The plot comes from Anuja Chauhan’s novel ‘Club You to Death’, so credit to the casting team for recreating it almost exactly.

This is Sara Ali Khan’s most urbane role in a while, and she makes the most of the agency the character gives her. The script extracts every last drop of emotion from viewers who accept the character of Vijay Varma as a twisted, broken practitioner of everyday violence.

The red herring and the backstory about Varun Mitra could have gotten less screen time. The Mubarak Murders probably would have worked better as a miniseries, given its length requirements alone, but in the end, the film is inherently entertaining.
