Preamalu – A breezy romance enhanced by solid performances

There is no language barrier between romance and movies. This fact was once again proven beyond doubt with the huge hit of ‘Manjimmel Boys’. The Tamil version of the blockbuster Malayalam romance film ‘Premalu’ will be released on March 15th. It remains to be seen whether this breezy romance will have the same success.

The title ‘Premalu’ is justified as the main setting of the story is Hyderabad. The protagonist, Sachin (Nasreen K. Ghafoor), was a poor village boy who came to study a course before moving to England. He and his friend share a modest room. At the same time, Reenu (Mamitha Baiju) also finds a job as a software tester for her. Her team leader Aadhi (Shyam Mohan) keeps an eye on her and tries to impress his girlfriend. At the wedding, Sachin is in direct conflict with Reenu, but there are significant differences in their personalities and financial backgrounds. Whether Sachin can woo Renu and whether she chooses him over the richer Adi is what the rest of the ‘Premal’ script is all about.

Nasreen K. Ghafoor has a boy-next-door look and is charming throughout the film as Sachin. He is equally adept at light scenes as well as emotional ones when he faces rejection from a girl. Mamitha Baiju is mesmerizing as the bubbly Reenu, her eyes always sparkling with the innocence of a young girl taking her first steps into adulthood. Her reactions and counters to all the other characters are a joy to watch. Mamitha is sure to be a big hit in the South Indian film industry in her near future. Sangeeth Pratap screams as Amal Davis brings down the house several times. Shyam Mohan, who plays the role of a self-centered semi-villain, is a big plus for the film as his humor at the climax works well. The rest of the cast are all natural, making the film more relatable to the audience.

What is most effective is the natural flow of the script, which makes you feel drawn into the youthful world of Premal. Most scenes are sprinkled with humor and are fun to watch. Keep an eye out for wedding and engagement scenes in Hyderabad and Bangalore. The character dynamics between the pair of protagonists are polar opposites of each other, so the journey that brings them together is quite interesting. The film also talks about friendship through the characters of Amal and Krithika and their flirting is also natural.

On the downside, the screenplay falters in the second half as it follows the usual route to a mundane but enjoyable climax. Love, which is at the heart of the subject matter, is treated in a much lighter manner, lacking depth. The Tamil dubbing in some places sounds unnatural and also dilutes the humor in some key scenes.

Vishnu Vijay’s music has already become a huge hit among the youth with his remix of MM Keeravani’s super hit ‘Ya Ya Ya Yadava’. Ajmal Sabu’s cinematography ensures that the audience is always part of the narration, and Akash Joseph Varghese’s cutting gives a smooth flow from start to finish. Fahadh Faasil and his associates are producing the film and the Tamil version is being distributed by Red Giant Movies. Director Girish AD is known for his youth films and women-centric films. He has written and executed the breezy romance to near perfection, and this movie is already reaping the benefits as it is already a blockbuster.

verdict: Enjoy a youthful romantic comedy
