Anurag reviews Manjumel Boys, Brahmayugam.Says Hindi films are ‘far behind’ | Bollywood
Director Anurag Kashyap reviewed Malayalam films ‘Manjumel Boys’ and ‘Brahmayugam’ for Letterboxd and had nothing but praise for them. She seemed unsure whether Hindi films could match the current state of the Malayalam film industry, but after watching Laapata Ladies, she changed her mind. See his review. “In Hindi, you can only recreate such ideas.”
Anurag seemed sad about the current state of Bollywood when he left a review for Manjumel Boys on Letterboxd. He writes: Much better than the big budget movies made in India. So confident, so impossible storytelling. I wondered how I would pitch this idea to producers. In Hindi, you can only remake such ideas. Hindi cinema has been largely left behind by three consecutive great Malayalam films. (sic)”
“Jealous of Malayalam filmmakers”
Anurag also reviewed ‘Brahmayugam’ on the portal and wrote that he is “jealous” of the boldness of Malayalam filmmakers. He writes: “I’m really envious of Malayalam filmmakers. The courage, boldness and amazing discerning audiences in Kerala who are empowering filmmaking. I’m so jealous. (sic)” He also gave full praise to Mammootty and said that he will watch ‘Kaathal: The Core’ next. “And Mammootty…what did he do…Next on the list is Kathal…(sic).”
“My heart was so full that I cried like a baby.”
However, Anurag seems to have found some solace after watching Kiran Rao’s ‘Raapata Ladies’. “My heart is so full after watching Kiran’s soulful and honest film. I cried like a baby. And seeing the packed audience gives me hope and faith in Hindi cinema and its audience. Revived. Beautiful writing, sincere and sincere performance. Blissful, (sic),” he wrote on his website.
He wrote a long note on Instagram, which read in part, ‘Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa3 After feeling like I wasn’t going to do it, I watched the next one.” Kiran actually went and did it, just like @vidushak did in his AIR. For me, he is a great start to 2024 for Indian cinema. (sic)”
