Yash Chopra refuses to change the ending of ‘Lamhe’ despite industry pressure: ‘Make a Nahi Chali movie a Nahi Chali’ Bollywood News
Yash Chopra’s “Lamhe” The film, starring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi, was rejected by audiences at the time for its daring portrayal of love. The film’s screenwriter Honey Irani, in his interview, talked about how Yash Chopra stood his ground and did not change the climax of the film despite many suggestions from his colleagues. He revealed that. She also told how her filmmaker gave her a one-line synopsis and asked her to write her script.
While speaking to Komal Nahata, Irani said Chopra always wanted to do “something fresh and different”. “In Lamhe’s case, he said to me, ‘I want to make a movie. I’ve been working on it for a long time. You’ll see what you can do with that idea.'” There’s a boy who loves a girl, and she’s not. The idea was just one line: she loved a man, got married, and the boy still loved her. Now, what do you do with this one-line idea of his? But you have to run with it. That’s how I wrote ‘Lamhe’,” Irani recalls.
The screenwriter wrote the script in 15 days and narrated it to Chopra, who reportedly shed tears at his reaction. Irani said, “After hearing the narration, he (Chopra) left without making an expression or saying anything.” I started crying, and so did Pam. I said to her, “Why is she crying when she thinks the party is over?” She told me that she really liked her script. I thought I wrote it in 15 days, but I should have taken more time. Yash ji came after half an hour and hugged me. It was the best day of my life. ”

Despite the best efforts of the film team, Lamhe failed to bring people to the cinemas. “Lamhe was a big setback for me. Everyone was working so hard on it and everyone loved the film, so why didn’t it work? And everyone said, ‘You said we should change the climax.’ ” I started saying, “Huh?” In fact, we were told not to follow this objective and Yash ji and I discussed and thought of three other objectives for her. ”
But eventually, Yash Chopra realized that he could not change the film’s script. “Yashji said, ‘Honey, what are we doing?'” Irani said. Why change your original idea?’ So we didn’t use the alternative version, but Yash ji said, ‘We’ll just use this end.’ Nahi chalegi toh nahi chalegi (It’s okay if the movie doesn’t work out.)
Yash Chopra “felt very bad when Ramhe didn’t work. He loved the film so much.” But as the years passed, the film gained cult status, and Irani asked those who came to praise the film, “What happened to you when this film was released?” Now it looks like this.
