“Past Lives” wins the Spirit Award for Best Picture
Past life It won Best Feature Film at the 2024 Independent Film Spirit Awards on Sunday.
After being honored by Jude Law at the end of the ceremony in Santa Monica, director Celine Song took to the stage with the film crew to share some heartfelt words.
“I have been given the amazing opportunity to speak on behalf of these amazing, amazing directors here,” Song said. “I feel honored to be here to talk about this film that we have to share with you.”
The director – who also won Best Director on Sunday – went on to talk about a deeper theme that was also present in the film, and what it means to her.
“There’s a concept in our film, it’s an Eastern concept… and it’s about how finding the same place and time in this life means that we already know each other for many, many lives that came before this one. And I think while making this film, I felt this The way everyone on stage here, I know they felt the same way.
“Accepting the Best Picture award on behalf of all of them and on behalf of our team, it’s a feeling for me where I feel, you know, less alone because I know everyone here feels the same too,” Song added.
The award for Best Feature Film goes to the producer of the film, which includes David Hinojosa, Pamela Koffler and Christine Vachon.
Other nominees in this category at the Spirit Awards are We are all strangers, American fantasy, May December, Corridors And We have grown now.
Past life, which was also nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards, follows two childhood friends, Nora and Hye-sung, who are forced to separate when Nora’s family immigrates from South Korea. They are later reunited in New York after two decades and must reflect on the nature of their relationship, now living different lives. Starring Greta Lee, Teo Yu, John Magaro, and Moon Seung Ah.
