“I remember this very clearly. There was a fair going on in Bandra at the time. I was a teenager, maybe 14 years old, and I was with my family. I knew what was going on. It wasn’t like I didn’t notice. As I was walking, someone kept pinching my butt. I looked back, but it was so crowded that I couldn’t see who did it. tried to touch me inappropriately many times and I was becoming paranoid. I was with my family and a lot of kids from my building were also coming. But at that time “I was so shocked by what had happened that I couldn’t say anything,” she recalled.
“I still remember how it felt. I remember being poked and pinched. It’s like my body remembers…these are traumas that you can’t get over,” she said.
“When you’re in the middle of a crowd, you often don’t even know who did it. I have a friend who got flashed just outside his school. When we were students, there was an auto-rickshaw driver in Juhu. There was a hand. It wasn’t right outside the school, it was near the area. I was walking home at the time. He would “do his job” (in front of us). This is a disease. How do we get to the point where our emotions are so heightened that we think this is normal? A lot of that is through education,” she added.
“At that moment (when you face an incident like this) you are so numb, so traumatized, you don’t know what to do… you feel so violated,” Bhumi said. She will be seen in her new film Bakshak as a journalist who works to protect young girls from sexual abuse.
