My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Movie Review: Nia Vardalos Returns for Unnecessary Sequel
The lovable but meddling Portocalo family is back as they travel from Chicago to Greece for a reunion that contains a few surprises. The comedy debuts on OTT on Jio Cinemas.
About my big fat greek wedding 3
The third time is not a charm for this family comedy series. Writer and star Nia Vardalos returns to the director’s chair as she reprises her role as Greek American Tula. In this third film, an expanded Portokalos travels to Greece for a reunion to honor his late father and has a good time despite all the setbacks. comedy movie My Big Fat Greek WeddingNow airing on Jio Cinema, it features all the familiar faces, but its plot and jokes are recycled from previous features.
My Fat Greek Wedding 3: narration
After the death of the Portocalos patriarch and the diagnosis of dementia of the mother, the family tries to move on. Daughter Tula decides to fulfill one of her father’s constant wishes, to return his journal to her three best friends in Greece. So she heads to Athens for the clan, as her aunts, brothers, cousins, husband Ian (John Corbett) and daughter Paris (Elena Kampouris) accompany her to a grand reunion in her homeland.
Except things don’t go according to plan and the gang has trouble keeping their father’s promise in a small town. How will the Portocalo family achieve this? A mostly conflict-free film easily resolves these issues as well.
My Big Greek Wedding 3: Writing and Directing
Vardalos took the world by storm in 2002 with his low-budget rom-com My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Set in Chicago, she stars as the eldest daughter in a conservative Greek-American family who falls in love with a non-Greek (Corbett). Even worse, he’s a vegetarian! The family comedy took off at the box office worldwide, as the film deservedly became a blockbuster and an Oscar nominee for best screenplay.
The rest of the forays into this universe, including the sequels and the TV series, didn’t match the appeal of the original. We’ve already heard most of the jokes about super families and how everything comes from the Greeks. What’s more, this third film features little of Tula’s parents (the late Michael Constantine and Laine Kazan), and they were a big part of the charm of the previous projects.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3: The Plays
Although most of the actors are reprising their roles, there is nothing new to add here. Corbett and Andrea Martin as Tula’s Aunt Vula get a few laughs as the rest of the cast seems to move, including Vardalos. The new cast also lacks significant parts to stand out enough, although Melina Kotzelow does her best as Victor, the mayor of the small town the family visits for the reunion.
My Big Greek Wedding 3: Criticism
The secret to the success of the first film was that it was all about family ties, especially when weddings were involved. That is why he was in audiences (who were not of Greek origin) all over the world. With the latter part, again produced by Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, it felt like the creators had simply laid out a checklist of what the film should contain, with a hasty wedding in the third act.
There was a premise for a third movie, but Vardalos didn’t do it right. The result is no less satisfactory. Better to just watch the 2002 feature for nostalgia’s sake.
