The box office data for 2023 is here and gives a clear picture of what the past year has been for the Indian film industry. According to the Omax Box Office Report 2023, the box office revenue in India last year was Rs 12,226 crore, making it the first year in history to cross Rs 12,000 crore. In 2019, the Indian film industry’s total box office revenue was Rs 10,948 crore.
According to reports, Hindi films recorded their best year ever in 2023 with a total box office collection of Rs 5,380 crore, crossing the Rs 5,000 mark for the first time. The box office share of Hindi films (44%) reached pre-pandemic levels of 44%, up from 33% in 2022. While Tamil and Telugu maintained their share, Hollywood and Kannada films declined, losing share compared to 2022. 12% to 9% and 8% to 3%, respectively.

“More than 1,000 films were released in 2023, but the top 10 films alone accounted for 40% of the year’s total box office collection. Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan , became the highest-grossing film of 2023 with a total box office collection of Rs 734 crore,” the report said.
Interestingly, Shah Rukh Khan has released three films last year – ‘Jawan’, ‘Pathaan’ and ‘Dunki’, with a combined gross collection of Rs 1,622 crore. .
The top four films of 2023 were all original Hindi films. Jawan, Ranbir Kapoor’s controversial film ‘Animal’, Pasaan and director Sunny Deol’s comeback film ‘Gadar 2’. Each of these films grossed over Rs 600 crore at the box office. Prabhas-starrer ‘Salar: Part 1 – Ceasefire’, Rajinikanth’s ‘The Jailer’ and Vijay’s ‘Leo’ were the other three films that crossed the Rs 400-crore mark at the Indian box office.
According to the report, attendance in 2023 was 94.3 million Cr (943 million), an increase of only 6% compared to 2022. Attendance remains below pre-pandemic levels of SEK 130 million in 2019. The biggest jump was seen in the average ticket price. (ATP) increased by 9% compared to 2022 from Rs 119 to Rs 130.
“This growth is primarily a result of increased box office revenue for Hindi films, which operate at a higher ATP compared to southern language industries,” the report notes.
While most language industries (excluding Hindi) struggle to sustain their performance in 2022 (Tamil and Telugu grew by 14% and 6% respectively), Punjabi films are poised to grow in 2023. It is back and has seen a 60% increase in box office revenue compared to 2022.
