The film we are talking about is ‘Karz’ directed by Subhash Ghai starring Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Simi Grewal and Raj Kiran. The 1980s film tanked at the box office, collecting only 3.6 million rupees worldwide. The film was influenced by the big-budget action film Qurbani, which was released a week later.
Two decades later, Harry Baweja produced a film with the same title, Karz: The Burden of Truth, starring Sunny Deol. Movies like those in the 1980s were also huge failures and failed to recover their movie budgets.
In 2008, Satish Kaushik used a similar title, Karzzzz, for a film starring Himesh Reshammiya made on a budget of Rs 240 million, but the result was an even bigger flop. The film’s failure reportedly pushed the film’s investors to the brink of bankruptcy.
