A Bollywood actress who faced loneliness and poverty despite being married five times

mumbai: In the history of Bollywood, where love stories often have fairytale endings, there is the melancholy story of the acclaimed ‘Lala Rappa Girl’ Meena Shorey. Born Khurshid Jehan in Raiwind, Punjab, British India, her journey from obscurity to limelight was propelled by an unexpected turn of fate.

Meena’s foray into the film industry began when Saurabh Modi noticed her during the release of the film ‘Sikandar’. He renamed her Meena and offered her a supporting role in his film, and her film journey began. However, when she received a notice imposing her contract, her fateful plans were very different. She bounced back and successfully carved out her own way, securing her freedom to pursue her various film offers.

Meena has been married five times, her first marriage to fellow artist Zafr Raja, an actor, producer and director, whom she met on the set of the film ‘Sikandar’. Her subsequent marriages include Al Nasir, Roop K. Shorey (hence the name Meena Shorey), Raza Mir, and Asad Bokhari. Despite her multiple alliances, Meena’s life path crossed her corridors of solitude.

Meena achieved success early in her career and appeared in films like ‘Shalimar’ and ‘Humayun’. However, as the years passed, her financial difficulties plagued her existence. According to her reports, during her last decade starting in 1974-1975, Meena faced financial difficulties and she became dependent on every penny.

In an ironic twist of fate, Meena Shorey, whose glamor once graced the silver screen, spent her final moments in Pakistan, far from the glamor of Bollywood. On February 9, 1989, she departed alone, without any of her five husbands present. In a heart-wrenching expression of solidarity, donations were collected to organize Meena’s last rites, a story of the ups and downs of a Bollywood actress who, despite being glamorous, succumbed to the harsh realities of her life. It emphasized the sombre end of the journey.
