The National Society of Film Critics votes on its picks for the best film from the past year.

The organization, founded in 1966 and made up of more than 60 critics from prominent media outlets across the country, votes annually on its selections for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Actor, Supporting Actress, Screenplay and Cinematography. Awards may also be given for non-English language films, non-fiction films, production design, and cinematic heritage.
The collection began with a number of special awards, including Criterion Channel Heritage Awards, Facets, Kim’s Video, Scarecrow Video, and Vidiots.
The NSFC praised Criterion for its “adventurous, wide-ranging, meticulously curated selection of films, from American independent films to world cinema to shorts to Hollywood classics, making it easy to get the kind of reference cinema every city should have.”
Facet’s, Kim’s Video, Scarecrow Video and Vidiots were honored “for preserving extensive libraries of films on disc and tape and making those libraries available to the general public.”
Voting is done via a weighted ballot system. The group explained on its X (formerly known as Twitter) account., where results are shared while voting is taking place. In the first ballot, members vote for their top three choices, with the first choice receiving three points, the second choice receiving two points, and the third choice receiving one point. The candidate who scores the most points and appears on the majority of ballots is the winner. If no winner is declared on the first ballot, the category moves to the second ballot, without proxies. Voting continues as many rounds as possible until the candidate receives the greatest number of points and appears on a majority of the ballots.
