Mumbai : The days of OTT and television shooting movies in the background are long gone. Costs for both full-length productions and web series artists have skyrocketed in recent years. In terms of production costs, some of the most expensive web series available now exceed those of high-budget motion pictures. The lead actor of India’s highest-grossing online series earned a record salary, surpassing popular shows like Animal and Dunki.

The highest-grossing Indian show on OTT is Rudra: The Edge of Darkness, the Hindi-language Disney+ Hotstar remake of British series Luther. With a set budget of Rs 200 crore, the series has a much bigger budget than any other available on Indian streaming services. A popular news portal reports that the show’s lead star Ajay Devgn has paid Rs 125 crore for it, with the balance of the price going towards production and marketing costs as well as remuneration of the cast members.
It is interesting to note that this puts Rudra’s budget above some recent high-profile Indian films like Animal (100 crore) and Dunki (85 crore). Rudra had a bigger budget than even Aamir Khan’s ambitious Laal Singh Chadha, which came in at Rs 180 crore. Other recent Indian films that released on a lower budget than Rudra Season 1 are Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan (132 crore), Gadar 2 (60 crore) and Sam Bahadur (50 crore).
Idris Elba plays a London police detective in the British crime thriller Luther, which has a Hindi translation titled Rudra. Ajay Devgn portrays the part of Rudra. Along with Raashii Khanna, Esha Deol, Atul Kulkarni and Ashish Vidyarthi, the show is directed by Rajesh Mapuskar. In March 2022, the first season debuted on Hotstar.
