2 states (2014) is a hugely successful film starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller of the same name. It was produced by Abhishek Varman, who made his big directorial debut with this romantic drama. However, there was a time when it was none other than Vishal Bhardwaj who planned the film version of 2 States. Moreover, superstar Shah Rukh Khan was almost set to play the male lead. The project was then shelved and the rights soon passed into the hands of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Sajid Nadiadwala’s Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, who ultimately cast Arjun and Alia. In an interaction with Mid-Day’s Mayank Shekhar, Vishal Bhardwaj revealed that there was a disagreement over where the film should be set. While Vishal wanted to set the story in a bank, Shah Rukh Khan wanted to start the love story from college. Vishal Bhardwaj said, “We (Shah Rukh Khan and I) had a difference of opinion regarding the setting. But we felt the pain. I recently wished him Jawan. Every time we met, he kept repeating, “We have to make a movie together.” ”

The 2009 novel “2 States” is based on the life of Chetan Bhagat and tells the story of a couple from two Indian states who struggle to get their parents to approve of their marriage.
