Vikas Kumar Recalls The Biggest Compliment He Got For Kaala Paan By Ashutosh Gowariker | Web Series
Actor Vikas Kumar is the heart and soul of Netflix India’s Kaala Paan. In an interview with Hindustan Times, he shared that he is confident of the acceptance of the web series even more than a month after its release. The show ended on a cliffhanger and recently announced its second season.
Kaala Paani success and season 2
Vikas predicts her screening in Kaala Paani Season 2, “Only Netflix can answer that. My character should be there. Honestly, I have no idea. ” Set against the backdrop of an outbreak in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the show is based on an age-old disease that suddenly returns and forces a lockdown situation, reliving the horrors of the Covid pandemic. Vikas plays Santosh Savla, an estranged father who suffers from the loss of his wife and tries his best to reunite with his estranged children.
Vikas said, “We all knew we were working on something special. It is very well written. The creators made very good content and relatable. I always wanted to be a part of it. You can see their honesty at work. Their casting process was very honest. There could have been many famous names in all our main roles. But they were faithful in who was right for the role and I think the best person was given the part after the audition. I told Netflix to support the project.”
Vikas Kumar in praise of Ashutosh Gowariker
The actor reveals that he used to choose the scripts. “I don’t accept projects if I don’t like them. Ashutosh Gowariker was in Kaala Paan. If it’s there, then there has to be some merit in the project.” Recalling his memories with the Lagaan director, with whom he did not share a scene, Vikas said, “I was hoping to meet him during the shoot, but we didn’t have a scene together. We met during reading session and promotions. He called me after watching Kaala Pani. He said, Hello Vikas, this is Ashutosh Gowariker. I finished watching last night and I need to talk to you. He apologized profusely for not knowing what I had done before. He said, “This is your introduction to me, and what an introduction.” Let’s congratulate each other. According to him, we will be proud of this show for a long time.”
Vika had a few more incidents, even from unknown quarters. He described it best, “I had such a reception for Aarya 3, but this time my character took them over. The other day I was in a cafe and a guy came up to me. He asked me if I was a “kala pani boy” and hugged me. What more do you ask for?”
The inspiration behind Santosh Savla in Kaala Pani
So was there any inspiration behind portraying Santosh Savla? With a heavy heart, the actor shared, “Even my department doesn’t know this… Santosh Savla is my distant cousin’s inspiration. He is a member of my beloved family who is no longer with us. I lost it during the second wave of covid. We used to call him papu bhaiya. He dressed and acted like a santo; Very simple and everyone loved it. I based Santoshi on Pappu Bhaiya and the irony is that the film is based on an epidemic. A year after her death, I contacted my sister-in-law and told her that I was shooting for Kaala Paan and dedicated my role to her. I want to believe somewhere that he looked down on me.”
Vikas Kumar on his daughter’s reaction
Vikas is not only a loving father but also loving in real life. She shared the reaction of her 12-year-old daughter, who is her biggest critic. He said: “My daughter was trying to make light of the situation as we watched her. At the scene where I started looking for my daughter, she fell silent. I only saw tears in my eyes. He didn’t say much, but he came to me and said, “I’m proud of you, father.”
Apart from Kaal Paani, Vikas has several notable projects under his credit. From playing the role of Inspector Rajat in CID to starring in Hameed and Parmanu, the actor summed up his journey, “I am chosen by what I do. If you look closely, you will see that it was slow progress as an actor, but steady. It’s also because maybe I am. I don’t know how to do PR.”
When Vikas Kumar was stereotyped
So, has there been a dearth of good projects for Vikas? He agreed: “Earlier, I had played the roles of a police officer. They will put you in a bracket. I don’t mind playing a soldier or a cop as long as it’s a very integral story. I’ve done non-police roles as well, but I think what happened was the best.”
“At the same time, I am busy. I am also a dialogue coach. My income comes from there. We are working on big projects like working with Katrina Kaif for Tiger 3, Babil Khan for The Railway Men and John Abraham for Pathaan. This work helps me choose the right type of project. I don’t want to do a project for money or production titles. If I was only an actor, it would have been different,” wrote Vikas.
