Dhootha marks the OTT debut of Tollywood actor Naga Chaitanya. Written and directed by Vikram K Kumar, the series is currently available for streaming in multiple languages.
story:
Sagar (Naga Chaitanya), a well-known journalist, becomes the editor-in-chief of Samachar newspaper. Sagar is very excited about this promotion, but his happiness does not last long as a series of tragedies take place in his life. Even more amazing is that several newspaper clippings predict these tragedies. How is this even possible? Does Sagar have an enemy in his profession? Has Sagar managed to solve the mystery of the newspaper clippings? This is what Dhootha is all about.
Plus points:
How the story is told is most important and this is where the skills of the directors come into play. The basic plot of Dhootha is not novel and in fact resembles Vikram Kumar’s old film, 13B. But the approach to the story is pretty good. It is not a piece of cake to tell a famous story in an intriguing way, but Vikram K Kumar does it with conviction. It takes us into the story from the very first episode. The suspense is well constructed with solid use of the background score, breathtaking visuals, and amazing production design.
Exciting moments await us all the time. The display of some of the dead is breathtaking and these crime scenes have us on the edge of our seats. Vikram K Kumar is giving a powerful message to the public and it doesn’t look too much at all. There are many layers and characters in the show. In the end, all the dots are well connected. Each character continues to move the story forward.
Naga Chaitanya makes an impressive OTT debut with Dhootha. There are two shades to his character and Akkineni as an actor does a fantastic job. As a man who fights for the safety of his family, Naga Chaitanya lived the role to the fullest. He had a pretty good feel for emotional sequences as well. Parvathy Thiruvothu steals the show with her sultry performance. It takes a while to get used to dubbing it, but after that there’s no looking back.
Priya Bhavani Shankar, Prachi Desai, Pasupathy, Ravindra Vijay, Tharun Bhascker and others have done a solid job in their roles. The climax episode where the twists are revealed one by one is pretty good. The rain background throughout the series enhances the viewing experience.
Minus points:
The flashback parts didn’t make much of an impact. The scenes in these flashback parts could have been done better as this is where the series lacks punch.
Also, Dhootha could have done with a shorter time frame for better impact. Especially, the pace slows down in the middle episodes. The series has some controversial words that may not go down well with a few sections of the audience.
Technical aspects:
Ishaan Chhabra’s haunting background score is intriguing. Mikolaj Sigula’s cinematography is top notch. The creators spent a bomb on the series, because each frame looks solid. However, the editing could have been better.
Although Vikram K Kumar was disappointed with his previous outing, he makes up for it with Dhuta. The story is simple, but the director tells it in a fascinating way by adding several layers. There is also a good message for the community.
Verdict:
All in all, Dhootha is an engaging mystery thriller with plenty of interesting moments. Although the plot is not a novel, the narrative is mostly gripping. Excellent performances by the cast and solid technical values are the major assets of Dhootha. However, the runtime could have been shorter and the flashback parts better. Still, this Naga Chaitanya starrer is a good watch this weekend.
