First Teaser of Heramand: First look at the upcoming web series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” It opened on Thursday. The series marks the OTT debut of Indian auteur Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The first look paints a compelling picture of pre-independence India, bringing together an ensemble cast, with gorgeous canvases and larger-than-life sets. It features Bhansali’s signature production design and riveting performances by its lead actor. The series stars Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sharmin Segal and Sanjida Sheikh in lead roles.

The first look is reminiscent of many of SLB’s iconic works in terms of textures, framing, composition and costumes.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s art of storytelling is seen in every frame, making it the most Indian story for a global audience in the most Indian way.

The series explores the cultural reality of Heramand, a glittering district, through the stories of courtesans and their patrons, set against the tumultuous backdrop of India’s freedom struggle of the 1940s.

Earlier, speaking to Netflix CEO Ted Sarando, Sanjay mentioned how strong female characters are an integral part of his stories. He said, “Be it Manisha’s character in ‘Khamoshi’ who takes care of her different parents, Nandini in ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ who has the courage to pursue her love and then make a choice, Mastani’s character in ‘Bajirao Mastani’ or In Rani’s Black, for me, the impact of the story is multiplied by the strong female character.”

He also mentioned, “A strong female character is the backbone of any project for me. I won’t do ‘Bajirao Mastani’ unless it’s ‘Mastani’.”

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, will soon premiere on Netflix.
