Mumbai: Do you enjoy watching Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed web series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar? If yes, then a new update regarding the hit show will surely bring a smile on your face.

Streaming giant Netflix has renewed the series for a second season, Variety reports.

In its first week of release on May 1, the series topped Netflix’s worldwide non-English TV chart in 43 countries, becoming the streamer’s most-watched Indian series globally. The series has been reigning at number 1 on the Indian Top 10 charts since its launch.

From 1920 to 1947, when the subcontinent was divided into India and Pakistan, the first season of the lavish story takes place in the Heramand district of Lahore, British India, the setting of the Tawaifs. Like the geisha of Japan, tawaifs were trained in music and dance and tutored by nobles. The show centers on Mallikajaan (Manisha Koirala), the scheming queen of Heramand, and her vengeful niece Faredan (Sonakshi Sinha), who has ambitions to take her aunt’s place.

The show also stars Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao Hydari, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman and Taha Shah Badusha.

About the extension of the series, Bhansali said, “It takes a lot to make a series. This one took a lot. After “Gangubai”. [Berlinale title ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’] It came out in February 2022, and I’ve been working every day since then, without a break. So the onus is huge on the series,” Bhansali told Variety.

In Heramand 2, women are now coming from Lahore to the film world. They leave Lahore after partition and most of them settle in Mumbai film industry or Kolkata film industry. So this trip to the market remains the same. They still have to dance and sing but this time for the producers and not the Nawabs. So this is the second season we are planning, let’s see where it goes,” added Bhansali.
Monika Shergill, VP Content, Netflix India said, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali has intricately woven magic to bring Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar to life. Watching audiences everywhere fall in love with this series — truly making it its own cultural phenomenon — has been so energizing, and I’m thrilled to share that we’re coming back for a second season.
