Netflix’s disclosure — the most detailed of any streaming service — follows a month-long battle between Hollywood unions and the major studios. Since the two strikes, writers and actors have received more compensation for their streaming work, and their pay depends in part on greater disclosure of US viewership data by services such as Netflix.

Now the company gives everyone—viewers, suppliers, and competitors—a deep look at what people are watching.

“Over the past 16 years of streaming, one constant has been people asking for more viewership data,” Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said in a statement to reporters. He said the lack of transparency had created a “mistrust over time” towards creatives.

For years, Netflix has refused to disclose viewership figures, a move other major streaming services have followed. From the beginning, the Hollywood creative community has appreciated not being subject to Nielsen audience ratings for live and cable television.

Recently, writers and producers have criticized Netflix, claiming that it hid audience data to avoid paying more for its most successful programs. The streaming giant has started to reveal more data. His reporting includes audience figures for several popular titles and a weekly Top 10 list showing the most-watched films and TV shows in English and other languages.

Netflix, based in Los Gatos, California, publishes these country-by-country lists as well, though they don’t include hours watched. Top 10 lists give the community a pretty good idea of what shows are popular, but don’t offer numbers for the majority of available titles.

The data released Tuesday covers more than 18,000 titles, including thousands of movies and shows that generate between 50,000 and 100,000 hours.
