Seth Meyers reveals his plans for the “Stefon” movie that was never made.
Stefon’s movie could have had it all.
In the latest episode of Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers’ podcast Las Culturistas, late time at night Host and former Saturday Night Live Star Seth Meyers has revealed his plans for a never-produced Stefon movie that would have featured Bill Hader as his beloved recurring city reporter character and a fictionalized version of Myers.
“It should start with Stefon on Weekend Update, and when it’s over, I’m disappointed again that you, as a city reporter, didn’t bring any St. Patrick’s Day tips,” Myers recounted. “And he said, ‘Look, to make it up to you, just go out, have a night — you and me together, in Stefon New York.’ And I say, ‘Okay, one night.’”
But that night on the town would end with one major development: the (fictional) death of Myers. Myers continued after a cold open consisting of “a super fast cut to him and me at all these crazy clubs.” Then I’ll end up in a body bag. And Stephon was saying, “He’s dead.” Then splash the title: Stephon: The movie“.

Stephon, a character created by Hader and John Mulaney, was a city reporter who would appear on Weekend Update to offer advice to Myers at the news desk. But his tips on things to do in the city will turn into a recap of everything on offer at New York’s hottest clubs, which will include unusual features like dwarves, felons, and more. Stefon was known for his trademark clownishness of covering his face with his hands, as well as his obvious admiration for Myers.
After first appearing in a sketch in 2008, Stefon became a regular on Weekend Update starting in 2009. Stefon made his official farewell in the 2013 Season 38 finale, which was Hader’s final episode as a cast member. He returned in 2014 to bid farewell to Myers in his latest Weekend Update.
Studios have apparently approached Hader and Myers about making a Stefon movie, but the idea never made it past the early stages.
