Rob Reiner Addresses Christian Nationalism in ‘God and Country’ Trailer – The Hollywood Reporter

Rob Reiner has shared the first trailer for his upcoming documentary examining the rise of Christian nationalism.

in God and countryReligious leaders, scholars, journalists and historians speak of the threat posed by the movement that infuses Christian doctrine into far-right politics. At the same time, the documentary seems to strive to distinguish between the positive aspects of Christianity and its politically fueled diversity.

“Christian nationalism not only poses a danger to our country, but it also poses a danger to Christianity itself.” chirp Rainer (Some good men), a producer on the project whose trailer (below) trended on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Friday.

The clip mixes footage of right-wing rallies and the January 6 riots with various interviews. “This is not a movement about Christian values, it’s about Christian power,” says one interviewee, while another notes that “Christianity at its best is committed to love, truth, and justice. If we do this right, what will our country be like.”

The documentary is directed by Emmy Award-winner Dan Partland, who has previously ventured into a similar field by directing 2020 films. #Invalid: The Psychology of Donald Trump.

“Christianity is in crisis,” Partland previously said of the film. “To be clear, Christianity is not the problem, it is having one’s faith Tells One’s political beliefs are not the problem. The problem is that Christian identity and political identity are so intertwined that it is difficult to determine where one ends and the other begins. The threat to democracy prompted me to explore this topic, but what I learned in the process is that the threat may be greater to the church itself.
