Netflix reopens Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater with Fincher’s ‘The Killer’
Netflix and American Cinematheque will screen “The Killer” on November 9th, followed by a Q&A with director David Fincher and unveil Hollywood’s extensive restoration of the iconic Egyptian Theater.
The Egyptian theater, which turned 101 years old on Wednesday, underwent a complete restoration that included the removal of the previous balcony, reconfiguration of the lobby, removal of the spacious courtyard, all-new seating, state-of-the-art lighting and Dolby Atmos sound. Ta. .
Originally built during the silent film era, the Movie Palace is known as the birthplace of the red carpet and the location of Hollywood’s first film premiere in 1922’s “Robin Hood.”
Netflix acquired the theater three years ago and partnered with the American Cinematheque to restore the historic building. Renovations were necessary due to aging, subsequent additions, and earthquake damage. American Cinematheque will program the theater on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and Netflix will use the space for special events, screenings, and premieres during the week.
To celebrate the opening, Netflix will also release the short documentary film Temple of Film: 100 Years of the Egyptian Theater, which will be shown on opening night. The short film, directed by Angus Wall, interviews Guillermo del Toro, Rian Johnson, Lynette Howell Taylor, Autumn Duraldo Arkapaw, and the theater’s restoration architect Peyton Hall.
