This year’s Academy Awards nominations include 15 short films in three categories: Best Animated Short Film, Best Live Action Short Film, and Best Documentary Short Film.

Although the short film categories are not as flashy as Best Picture – e.g Oppenheimer, Barbie, Bad things, Anatomy of a fall, Retainers And others – it can be a starting point for filmmakers hoping to move from short films to feature films. Notable past winners in the short film categories include Riz Ahmed, the late Kobe Bryant, Elton Goggins, Peter Capaldi, Martin McDonagh and Matthew A. Shery.
