The Kapoor Khandaan’s iconic RK Studios was reportedly sold to Godrej Properties this year after facing losses.

The Kapoor family is known for its tradition of celebrating Ganeshotsav in a big way. They have been celebrating it since the last 70 years at RK Studio, Chembur. This was one festival that the family used to celebrate with pomp and show. However, Randhir Kapoor, the eldest of the Kapoor siblings, recently told a leading daily that there won’t be any Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations for them this year and that 2018 marked the last such celebration for the Kapoor clan.

The prime reason behind this is the sale of RK Studios. The celebrations at this iconic studios owned by the Kapoors were popular in the city. The studio was one of the oldest, which saw many films being shot here. However, the family took a sad decision of selling the property to Godrej as it was facing huge financial loss. Hence, there is no common place for them to celebrate the fest.

Randhir Kapoor, the eldest of the Kapoor siblings, recently told Times of India that there won’t be any Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations for them this year and that 2018 was the last Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations from the Kapoor clan.

The tradition of hosting Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations at RK Studio was started by Raj Kapoor. RK Studio was sold earlier this year after the Kapoors incurred heavy losses on the property following a massive fire at the premises.

Ranbir Kapoor had said in an event recently, “RK Studios was RK Studios because of my grandfather. He built the studio because of his films and talent. Of course, you feel sad that the studio will not be there anymore, but I think, RK is more in the spirit and that is something I would really like to take forward. I would like to take the legacy forward, in producing film and making movies.”

Randhir, his brothers Rajiv Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor, nephew Ranbir Kapoor and other family members participated in Ganesh Utsav at RK Studio. On the final day of the festival, the Kapoors took out a procession to bid adieu to Bappa as they took the God for immersion.

Raj Kapoor had founded RK Films and Studios in 1948. Many popular films like ‘Awara’, ‘Shri 420’, ‘Mera Naam Joker’ and ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’ were produced there. In 2017, a large part of the studio was gutted in the fire. 

In 2018, the Kapoor family announced the sale. Real estate giant Godrej Properties has started preparations to buy it and convert it into luxury flats and retail space. Earlier this month, the studio was demolished.
