Extreme fanism in the southern film industry

Undoubtedly, the fan-favorite devotion to their favorite movie stars in South India is unparalleled. Icons like MGR, NTR and Rajkumar were revered in his sixties even before the era of television. This admiration has been passed on to later generations, and today stars like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Chiranjeevi enjoy immense respect and loyalty. These feelings are often expressed through grand gestures such as yagnas or offering milk to cutouts, but the enthusiasm can sometimes take a dangerous turn.

Tragic incidents serve as dark memories. For example, a 22-year-old Prabhas enthusiast met a tragic end due to electrocution while installing a Salaar banner at Ranga Theater in Sathyasai district on December 22.

Similarly, in 2019, another young fan lost his life in a similar accident during Saaho’s release. It is important to emphasize that such incidents are not a reflection on the stars, but on the need for fans, mainly the younger generation, to be careful and prioritize safety during the frenzied celebrations.

Why Tara Ajith disbanded her fan club

The extreme fandom surrounding movie stars isn’t limited to just one industry. In Kollywood, too, there are many heartbreaking incidents caused by fan celebrations. Last year, tragedy struck during the release of Thala Ajith’s ‘Tunibu’ when a 19-year-old fan lost his life after falling from a truck during a celebratory dance.

In another unfortunate incident in 2023, a Suriya lover was electrocuted to death while celebrating Suriya’s birthday in Andhra Pradesh. Incidents like this highlight an alarming pattern in which fan celebrations, however well-intentioned, can lead to loss of life, injury, and significant property damage. Realizing the gravity of the situation, actor Ajith distanced himself from such extremist fandoms and called on his followers to cherish their youth and prioritize their career and safety over extremist fandoms. Another factor in Ajith’s decision to disband his fan club 13 years ago was the unauthorized use of his name and image in political party propaganda and election campaigns.

In a recent shocking incident, three fans tragically lost their lives due to electrocution while installing cutouts of Yash on his birthday. In an interview with the media, the actor said that the biggest gesture for him is if his fans, wherever they are, want him from his heart.

“Tragic events like this make me dread my own birthday. This is no way to show your fandom. Please don’t show your love like this. I have a request for you all. . No banners, no bike chases, no risque selfies. My intention is for all my audience and fans to grow in life as I have.”

While it is natural to admire superstars and celebrating them is part of film culture, it is important for fans to ensure their safety, protect public and private property, and ensure that any celebration comes at the cost of life or property.
