Telugu film industry is in trouble… no different to Bollywood

It is no secret that the Hindi film industry is going through tough times. Many cinema owners feel that these terrible times are unprecedented. With one film after another flopping, cinemas are struggling to survive. With the box office showing a dire picture for about the first five months of 2024, many cinema owners fear they may be forced to cease operations. Several multiplexes have temporarily closed one or more screens until films perform well at the box office.

The situation in the Telugu film industry is also not good. In fact, it may be worse. Single screen cinemas in Telangana have been closed for 10-14 days since May 17. This is because there are no high-profile releases scheduled for the next few days. Moreover, cinema visitation is at an all-time low. To tide over the tough times, single screen cinemas have decided to close for 10 days. The closure period may extend up to 14 days. In the meantime, if any producer/distributor wants to screen his/her film in a single screen cinema, the cinemas are willing to oblige, provided that the producer/distributor bears any losses that may be incurred from screening the film. Reportedly, cinemas will incur less losses by remaining closed than screening a film with barely any audience.
