Shraddha Kapoor’s film is the biggest Bollywood opening of the year

The highly anticipated sequel to the horror-comedy “Stree” finally hit theaters on Thursday and shattered several box office records on its opening day.

The film secured a spot among the top five biggest openings of all time, surpassing blockbusters like Hrithik Roshan’s “War” and Salman Khan’s “Tiger 3.” “Stree 2” grossed over Rs 580 crore in ticket sales on its first day, making it Bollywood’s biggest opening film of 2024, ahead of other major releases like “Fighter” and “Kalki 2898 AD (Hindi).”

The movie’s lead actors, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, also achieved their career-best opening numbers with “Stree 2.” The film has been praised as one of the best performances in Bollywood, marking the first time either actor has seen a film of theirs gross double figures at the box office.

As the fifth installment in Maddock Films’ Supernatural Universe and a sequel to Amar Kaushik’s 2018 hit, “Stree 2” features Kapoor reprising her role alongside Rao, Pankaj Tripathi, Aparshakti Khurana, and Abhishek Banerjee. The film also includes special appearances by Akshay Kumar, Varun Dhawan, and Tamannaah Bhatia.

Originally slated for release on August 15, India’s Independence Day, the film’s theatrical debut was postponed, but “Stree 2” still managed to outperform “Kel Kel Maine” and “Vedas” at the box office.
