Popular production house Yash Raj Films has entered the OTT space with The Railway Men. The show stars Kay Kay Menon, Madhavan, Divyendu and Babil Khan in important roles.

Story:

The series tells the story of railway workers who saved lives during the Bhopal gas tragedy, considered the world’s worst industrial disaster. The incident took place on the night of December 2, 1984, at a pesticide factory of Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) in Bhopal.

Plus points:

The makers of The Railway Men deserve special recognition for highlighting the sacrifices of the unsung heroes who saved thousands of lives. The lack of proper training for Union Carbide employees and inadequate safety measures at the factory were the main causes of the disaster, and this is clearly shown.

The way industrial disasters are recreated is amazing and it’s heartbreaking to see so many innocent souls lose their lives. Since the people of Bhopal were not even aware of what was happening around them, fights started among them, leading to complete chaos. All these scenes move us and bring us to tears.

The acting of the lead cast is wonderful. Among them, Kay Kay Menon’s performance as the stationmaster stands out. He did a great job of playing the role and doing his best to save people. Divyendu and Babil Khan of Mirzapur fame packed their punches and provided great support to Kay Kay Menon.

Minus points:

The main problem with The Railway Men is that there are too many subplots. Most of them are not handled properly and increase the length of the show. The subplots also don’t have a proper ending. Some of the scenes are over-dramatised and this hinders the impact to some extent.

If you’re a fan of the English web series “Chernobyl,” you might not be completely charmed by “The Railway Men.” Although both deal with similar disasters, Chernobyl is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. Madhavan’s character could have been written better. Sometimes the pace is slower.

Technical aspects:

YRF Entertainment has invested a lot of money into this series and the production values look amazing. The sets were great and really represented a bygone era. Cinematographer Rubai’s cinematography is solid, and Sam Slater’s background score is excellent.

Director Shiv Rawali has done a decent job with this series. Although the team did a comprehensive investigation leading up to the Bhopal gas tragedy, things were over-dramatized to make the show more appealing. But the positives of The Railway Men outweigh its negatives.

verdict:

Overall, The Railway Men is a story of unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives for others during the Bhopal gas tragedy. The series benefits greatly from the phenomenal performances of Kay Kay Menon, Divyendu and Babil Khan and has many interesting moments. However, the multiple subplots and occasional slow pacing are key issues. Despite its flaws, The Railway Man is worth watching.
