Speaking previously at SXSW, Dev Patel explained how Monkey Man is about faith and documents “what’s going on in India.” He said, “This is really a revenge movie about faith. How faith can be a great teacher for the uneducated. For a child growing up in the woods, a mother teaches her child with stories and iconography.” You can inspire and fire your imagination, but you can also weaponize your faith and monetize it. Personally, I hope I don’t get into trouble for this, but for me… Hinduism is a beautiful philosophy and what is going on in India, we are trying to touch on all of this and give a voice to the voiceless.”

According to the film’s official synopsis, Monkey Man revolves around Dev, an anonymous young man who works at an underground fight club, wears a gorilla mask, and is beaten bloody every night by popular fighters for cash.

“After years of suppressed anger, the Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the city’s evil elite enclave. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hand becomes “Start an explosive campaign of retribution to take down the men who took everything from you,” the synopsis reads.
