Movies eligible for tax exemption
What’s the story?
State governments often declare films tax-exempt. Entertainment tax paid on movie tickets is divided equally between the Center and states.
If the latter declares a movie tax-exempt, the entertainment tax is reduced by 50%. It has little impact on the audience’s pockets, but it increases their awareness of the film.
Here are some recent examples of tax-free Hindi films:
“Article 370”
Aditya Suhas Jambales Article 370 is the latest movie to become tax exempt.
The Mohan Yadav-led Madhya Pradesh (Congress) government has made the Yami Gautam Dar and Priya Mani starrer tax exempt in the state. The Prime Minister made the announcement on Thursday.
This movie will be released nationwide on February 23rd. Uri: Surgical Strike The director is Aditya Dhar.
“Kerala Story”
Director Sudeep Sen, story of kerala It was exempted from tax in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led states of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Congress states.
Starring Adah Sharma, the film tells the story of Hindu women in Kerala who convert to Islam and are forced to join ISIS.
The controversial film was released in 2023 and grossed over Rs 150 million. Box office revenue was 300 million.
“Kashmir Files”
Vivek Agnihotri’s controversial work, kashmir file, tax-free in at least nine Bharatiya Janata Party-led states, including Gujarat, Haryana and Uttarakhand. In Assam, the government has announced that employees will be allowed to watch movies for half a day.
Released in March 2022, the film revolves around the escape of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley and stars Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumar, Misun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi.
“Tanhaji: The Unsung Hero”
Om Raut regular drama Tanhaji: The unsung hero, Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan star as Maratha warrior Tanhaji Malusare and Aurangzeb’s Rajput general Udaybhan Singh Rathore, respectively. It is now tax exempt in Maharashtra and UP.
The 2020 film is based on the Battle of Sinhgadh, which was fought between the Marathas and Mughals. The Marathas led by Marsale captured the fort and achieved victory.
