Few filmmakers are able to create fragments of the past in such a loving and authentic way. Shriram Raghavan is one such person. The date hasn’t been revealed, but it’s definitely in the past. There is an unrestrained festive atmosphere, cars full of cheerful makers parked low on the streets, dimly lit light bulbs criss-crossing the residential streets, and bright red spaghetti served by girls wearing Santa hats. A restaurant, an elderly man brandishing a strong homemade wine, and the famous South Bombay cinema welcoming patrons in its dark interior. Anything can and does happen.

Albert (vijay sethupati) and Maria (Katrina Kaif) don’t actually meet cute in the classic girl-boy way. This is a series of livelier, more mature bumps into each other that will make you grin and say, “Here we go again.” In fact, I couldn’t stop smiling during the first hour of the two-hour “Merry Christmas.” For when Albert returned to Bombay for the first time in seven years, he watched Maria struggle to hold back her sleepiness. A little girl and a giant teddy bear appear again and again until her daughter invites her daughter into the house, and everything is just like a dream and magical.
