BBC Radio 4 marks 25 years of Indian filmmaking in Scotland
BBC Radio 4 will broadcast a special programme called ‘Bony Bollywood: 25 years of Indian film making in Scotland’.
Celebrating 25 years of Bollywood and Indian cinema filmed in Scotland, presenter Ravi Sagu embarks on his own ‘filmi’ journey showcasing the glitz and glamour of Bollywood in Scotland.
Ravi talks about why the world’s largest film industry is using Scotland and its landscape as a top hotspot for filming outside Mumbai’s Film City.
The programme will be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds at 7.15pm on Sunday 2 June.
Ravi will be speaking to Bollywood experts including presenter Raj Dhanda and Glasgow-born Bollywood actor Ferina Wajier to find out more about the contributions of Indian filmmakers to Scotland as a major filming backdrop, and the cultural history of Indian cinema and Scotland, which dates back to the first waves of South Asian immigration in the 50s and 60s.
There are currently over 100 Indian films shot in Scotland in various regional Indian languages including Hindi, Punjabi and Tamil, and Ravi also spoke to UK-based Bollywood Line producers Parag Sanke, Deeksha Bhatia (Big Elephant Productions) and Adil Khan (Scotwood Productions) about the growth of the burgeoning location services offering.
Ravi Sagu is a regular presenter for Music, Arts & Culture and Documentaries on BBC Radio Scotland. Ravi co-produced the archive 4 show ‘The Great British Bhangra Explosion’ for BBC Radio 4 (April 2023) and hosted Demas TV highlights show ‘The Glasgow Mela 2022’, which was nominated for ‘Best Music Programme’ at the Broadcast Awards 2023.
