Director Anurag Kashyap has spoken about the negative impact of rising production costs on the Hindi film industry and said it will take time to reverse what has become the new norm.
Film director Anurag Kashyap spoke about the restructuring the Hindi film industry is undergoing, highlighting the changes that streaming platforms have introduced in India regarding budgets and how it has empowered certain stars to demand exorbitant amounts. He said that a lot of money going into filmmaking is not actually being spent on making films but catering to the demands of stars. The Indian Express recently detailed this. Appearing on the Humans of Cinema YouTube channel, Anurag said that ever since streaming platforms entered the Indian market, people who previously weren’t being paid enough suddenly realised their worth. “I’d never seen so many bangers on my sets, like I saw in Sacred Games,” he said, adding, “That’s how the culture started. And you can’t undo that. Eventually, technical staff who were totally ignored started getting paid… It’s fair in a way. But there’s a lot of extra stuff coming in.”

When asked about the recent big-budget films that have flopped, Anurag said, “Because they don’t just spend money on the film. What people have to understand is that when we make a film, we are working, we are creating something. It is not a holiday, it is not a picnic. The huge amount of money that is spent is not on making the film. It is spent on props and entourage. You are shooting in the middle of the jungle and then a car is sent to a city three hours away to deliver that five-star burger that you are craving.”
Several prominent figures in the film industry have spoken out about these rising costs. Film director Farah Khan said: Stars demand as many as four dressing tables On the set, it’s a waste of producers’ money. Meanwhile, Janhvi Kapoor is the daughter of a producer. She is concerned about rising costs.But at the same time, she wants to protect her team. “I believe that everyone on a film set is an artist. I am very protective of my team and I want to protect their rights,” she told indianexpress.com.
